Foolproof Training Treats

The Metric Method

Homemade dog treats on a cutting board with a digital scale showing precise measurements

The Reality Check

Stop eyeballing ingredients. "One cup of flour" can vary by 30% depending on humidity and how you scooped it. We use grams and ratios. These recipes are designed for high-volume training: non-crumbly, high-value, and rubbery so dogs can swallow them instantly and keep the training flow fast.

Step 1: The "Golden Ratio" of Dog Treats

For a perfect, cut-able, rubbery training treat, the base ratio is always: 2 parts Protein (Wet) : 1 part Binder (Dry) : X Eggs. Eggs act as both binder and moisture control. We weigh them too.

Stop using measuring cups. Always measure your base ingredients in grams. 100g is always 100g. It removes all the guesswork and guarantees consistency.

How it actually went for us

The Sardine Incident

Developing this exact ratio was not a quiet, scientific process. We tried to do our first major batch of sardine treats on a Tuesday afternoon. Keira and Lucy were stationed at the counter as the official "measurers," and Penny was aggressively doing floor-patrol, waiting for someone to drop a fish.

Between a 6-year-old and 9-year-old trying to handle oily sardines, the kitchen smelled like a bait shop, and there was oat flour covering the entire island. Our first batch was entirely eyeballed and turned into fish-scented dust the second we put them in our training pouches. That's exactly why Tiffany and I started weighing everything down to the gram. The kitchen might still be chaotic, but the treats never fail.

Transparency check: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means we get a small cut if you buy. But here is our promise: We never recommend garbage. If a brush couldn't handle a Cockapoo coat, or a puzzle toy didn't survive a 9-year-old accidentally stepping on it, it doesn't make this list.

The High-Precision Digital Scale

The absolute backbone of our treat recipes. It tares instantly, measures down to the single gram, and wipes clean easily (which is crucial when dealing with liver or fish).

Reusable Silicone Baking Mats

Parchment paper gets expensive when you are meal-prepping dog treats every Sunday. These silicone mats guarantee an even bake and zero sticking.
